Beyond Words is a powerful collection of creative and audio work, some of which are Koestler Award winning, born inside HMP Sudbury between 2022 and 2026, bringing together the voices of twelve cohorts and around one hundred men from vastly different backgrounds and abilities.
Within its pages and recordings, you’ll find poetry, spoken word, songs, podcasts and more, all created as part of a programme designed to introduce participants to a wide spectrum of creative writing forms. From songwriting and autobiography to script writing for radio, television, film and advertising, as well as writing for social media and podcasting. Drawing inspiration from poets such as Maya Angelou, Robert Seatter, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Gil Scott-Heron, William Shakespeare and Matsuo Bashō; songwriters including Chris Cornell, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur and Kendrick Lamar; novelists such as Irvine Welsh, Margaret Atwood, Alice Walkerand Bill Bryson; scriptwriters including Quentin Tarantino, Ronan Bennett and Mark Andrus; autobiographical voices like Malcolm X, Roald Dahl and Nelson Mandela; and contemporary podcasts such as The Candace Owens Show, The Joe Rogan Experience and The Diary of a CEO, the programme opened doors to expression regardless of starting point, even for those who began unable to read or write very well.
It is important to note that some participants faced barriers alongside limited literacy with additional learning needs such as dyslexia, autism and ADHD but these were celebrated and never allowed to limit creative expression; at times work was scribed collaboratively or recorded as audio in place of written text to ensure every voice could be heard. The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, filled with pride, reflection and a genuine sense of possibility for a creative future.
This collection offers just a glimpse into a much larger body of work, a testament to what can happen when people are given the space, tools and encouragement to find their voice.
